Death is not my fear

O Allah, my fear is not of death itself, but of departing from this world in a manner that does not earn Your pleasure. Ya Allah, grant me the strength and guidance to live my life in the best way possible and to prepare myself to meet You. Please do not take my life until I am in the best state, ready and worthy to stand before You. Ameen.

Prepare for Death

While trying to live each and every day, make some preparation to die. Being a muslim at birth is not a victory, but dying as a true muslim is the greatest victory ever found on earth.

It doesn't matter how you live your life in this world; what important is how you die, because real life starts after death. People think life starts after birth, actually real life starts after death.

O Allah, after you have blessed me with Islam. Make me die as a true Muslim.   Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen

What should I do in my dying moments?

Continuously seek forgiveness from Allah SWT.

Ibn `Umar narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Indeed Allah accepts the repentance of a slave as long as (his soul does not reach his throat).” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3537]

Keep hope and fear of Allah SWT at the time of death.

Thabit narrated from Anas, that: The Prophet entered upon a young man while he was dying. So he said: "How do you feel?" He said: "By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! Indeed I hope in Allah and I fear from my sins." So the Messenger of Allah said: "These two will not be gathered in a worshipper's heart at a time such as this, except that Allah will grant him what he hopes and make him safe from what he fears." [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 983]

Expect good from Allah at the time of death.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah al-Ansari reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) say three days before his death: None of you should die but hoping only good from Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. [Sahih Muslim 2877c]

It was narrated that Jabir said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘No one of you should die except thinking positively of Allah.’” [Sunan Ibn Majah 4167]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'If My slaves loves the meeting with Me, I too love the meeting with him; and if he dislikes the meeting with Me, I too dislike the meeting with him.' " (See Hadith No. 514, Vol. 8) [Sahih al-Bukhari 7504]

At the time of dying, ask Allah for forgiveness for sins and keep hope that Allah will forgive my sins and He [Allah SWT] admit me into His paradise.

Exhort your dying men to recite: 'La ilaha illallah'.

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Exhort your dying men to recite: 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no true god except Allah)." [Riyad as-Salihin 918]

Umm Salama reported God’s messenger as saying, “When you are with one who is ill or dying speak good words, for the angels say Amen to what you say.” Muslim transmitted it. [Mishkat al-Masabih 1617]

He whose last words are, `La ilaha illallah' will enter Jannah.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone says "I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as Apostle" Paradise will be his due. [Sunan Abi Dawud 1529]

...no one will enter Hell who has faith in his heart equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed. [Sunan Ibn Majah 4173]

It is narrated on the authority of 'Uthman that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said. He who died knowing (fully well) that there is no god but Allah entered Paradise. [Sahih Muslim 26a]

Mu`adh bin Jabal (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He whose last words are: `La ilaha illallah' (There is no true god except Allah) will enter Jannah.'' [Abu Dawud]. [Riyad as-Salihin 917]

Death is a fact, no one escapes it. May Allah SWT give us death with shahada on our lips and heart. Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen.

...do not die except as muslims. [Quran 3:102]

...I cannot succeed without God's help... [Quran 11 : 88]

...make me die as a Muslim... (Quran 12:101)

Buraida reported God’s messenger as saying, “The believer dies with the sweat on his brow.” Tirmidhi, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah transmitted it. [Mishkat al-Masabih 1610]

O Allah, I ask You for a good end to my life. May Allah give us death with shahada on our lips and hearts. Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen

Say the Shahada before going to sleep.

Please say the shahada before going to sleep, just in case we don't wake up.

It is absolutely not a Wajib (obligation) to say the Shahada when going to sleep. However, if a person says it before sleeping, then this is a good thing, because if he dies when asleep, the last of his words would have been “La ilaha illAllah.”

Ya Allah, if I die in my sleep, let my heart beat with your La ilaha illAllah. Ameen.

Good Death     [Husnul Khatimah]

A good death means, Be free from disbelief, shirk, innovation, and every minor and major sin. Neither Allah's nor humans' rights will remain on his head. And if death came on faith, then it is a good death. O Allah, I ask You for a good end to my life.

True believers remain patient even in agony of death.

Some people's death is very easy, while others experience great difficulty in their passing. Those who face death with hardship, if their faith is strong, will remain patient. When they endure the trials of death, they will say, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.'"

Allah SWT says about such people.

who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return." Such are the people on whom there are blessings and Mercy from Allah; and they are the ones that are rightly guided. (Quran 2 : 156 - 157)

"Those will be rewarded with the highest place [in Paradise] because of their patience.." (Quran-25:75)

And those who are weak in their faith will weep, lament, and complain during the throes of death. If, in times of trial, your heart remains patient, then understand that your faith is alive; otherwise, it is dead.

To those who complain during the agony of death, listen to the response to complaints.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: "Trials will not cease afflicting the believing man and the believing woman in their self, children, and wealth, until they meet Allah without having any sin." [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2399]

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When Allah wants good for his slave, He hastens his punishment in the world. And when He wants bad for His slave, He withholds his sins from him until he appears before Him on the Day of Judgement."... [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2396]

Always be afraid of a bad death.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse, then he is not a believer at the time he is doing it; and when somebody drinks an alcoholic drink, then he is not believer at the time of drinking, and when a thief steals, he is not a believer at the time when he is stealing; and when a robber robs and the people look at him, then he is not a believer at the time of doing it." Abu Huraira in another narration, narrated the same from the Prophet (ﷺ) with the exclusion of robbery. [Sahih al-Bukhari 6772]

May Allah save us from a bad death. Ameen Summa Ameen

Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying. Every servant would be raised (in the same very state) in which he dies. [Sahih Muslim 2878a]

Funeral

'A'isha reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) saying: If a company of Muslims numbering one hundred pray over a dead person, all of them interceding for him, their intercession for him will be accepted. [Sahih Muslim 947]

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: If any Muslim dies and forty men associate nothing with Allah stand over his bier. Allah will accept them as intercessors for him. [Sunan Abi Dawud 3170]

Disturbed by whispers of self and satan.

At the time of death, if we get whispers [waswase] against Allah SWT, His Messenger (PBUH), Islam, and faith enter one's heart and mind, will we be considered sinners?
